About S Scale S scale is 3/16ths of an inch to the foot or a ratio of 1:64. It fits nicely between 1:87 scale (HO), and 1:48 (O). It is now enjoying outstanding growth because of the variety and availability of new products coming into the marketplace. Other model makers discovered the joy of this scale years ago as well. Mattel's Hot Wheels are modeled in 1:64 scale, making them the perfect addition to any S-Scaler's layout.
A Short History of S Scale After WWII, A. C. Gilbert, a large toy manufacturer (Erector Set, etc.) came out with a line of S-Scale train sets and accessories under the American Flyer name. American Flyer and rival Lionel flourished until the 1960's when young boys attention was turned to slot-car racing sets and space oriented toys. Check out this site: S-Scale Trains for the rest of the story on the history of "s-scale empires." |
